The Grüner Veltliner 2022 by Abbazia di Novacella is one of the most distinctive white wines in South Tyrol, showcasing the potential of mountain viticulture in the Isarco Valley. Traditionally grown in Austria, Grüner Veltliner finds a second home here at high elevations, where the cool alpine climate and mineral-rich soils bring out the grape’s lively character and precise aromatics.
The grapes are harvested from vineyards located at around 650 meters above sea level, planted on glacial moraine soils rich in minerals. The grapes are hand-picked between late September and early October. In the cellar, vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve freshness and aromatic integrity. The wine then rests briefly on the fine lees before bottling.
In the glass, the Grüner Veltliner shows a pale straw yellow hue with greenish reflections. The nose reveals aromas of green apple, pear, lime zest, wildflowers, fresh herbs, and the grape’s signature white pepper note. On the palate, it is lively, crisp, and beautifully saline, with a clean, mineral finish. This is a wonderfully versatile white wine, ideal with vegetable-based dishes, asparagus, soft cheeses, steamed fish, or sushi and Asian cuisine.
