Abbazia di Novacella – 900 Years of Winemaking in the Heart of the Alps

Located in South Tyrol’s Isarco Valley, just outside the town of Bressanone, Abbazia di Novacella (Neustift Monastery) is a rare gem in the world of wine. Founded in 1142 by Blessed Hartmann, Bishop of Brixen, it is not only one of the oldest wineries in Italy, but also among the longest-standing in the world. For over 880 years, Augustinian canons have cultivated vineyards with devotion, making the abbey a cultural and spiritual landmark — as well as a beacon of Alpine viticulture.

The winery manages 86 hectares of vineyards, some owned and others farmed by trusted growers, all located in carefully selected areas between 600 and 900 meters a.s.l. The unique mountain climate — marked by cold nights and sunny days — combined with mineral-rich soils, is ideal for crafting precise, vibrant white wines with striking elegance and ageing potential. The estate specializes in local grape varieties such as Sylvaner, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller parcels planted to Gewürztraminer and Moscato Rosa. Red varieties — Schiava, Lagrein, and Pinot Noir — are grown further south on porphyry or gravel-rich soils in Bolzano and Cornaiano.

In the winery, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, while some cuvées are aged in large oak barrels, combining modern precision with centuries-old tradition. The result is a collection of wines defined by clarity, minerality, and purity — authentic expressions of the Alpine terroir. The top-tier “Praepositus” line includes the winery’s finest crus and most age-worthy bottlings.

Alongside its wine production, the monastery also produces premium apple juices from estate-grown orchards — another testament to the abbey’s holistic connection to the land.

Today, Abbazia di Novacella stands as a symbol of Alpine winemaking excellence, where time, tradition, and terroir converge in every bottle.
