Sizzano
Sizzano DOC is a hidden gem among the red wines of Alto Piemonte, crafted in the small town of Sizzano in the province of Novara. It embodies the deep connection between terroir, local winemaking tradition, and native grape varieties, with Nebbiolo at its core, complemented by small percentages of Vespolina and Uva Rara, just like its regional cousins Ghemme and Boca.
The vineyards are planted on morainic hills with sandy, clay-rich, and stony soils, benefiting from a cool and breezy climate that enhances aromatic finesse and minerality. By DOC regulations, Sizzano must age for a minimum of 24 months, including at least 18 months in oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity and structural harmony.
In the glass, Sizzano shows a ruby red color with garnet hues and a refined bouquet of ripe red fruits, sweet spices, leather, dried flowers, and earthy undertones. On the palate, it is elegant, fresh, well-balanced, and persistent, with smooth tannins and excellent drinkability. It offers versatility: enjoyable when young and promising with a few years of bottle aging.
Though less known than other Piedmontese appellations like Barolo or Barbaresco, Sizzano DOC is gaining recognition among wine lovers and collectors seeking authentic, characterful wines from unique terroirs. It is a great choice for those looking for an elegant and territorial red, perfect with traditional Piedmontese dishes, red meats, aged cheeses, or simply to enjoy on its own.
At Grandi Bottiglie, you’ll find a curated selection of Sizzano DOC wines, including rare vintages, Riservas, and large formats, sourced from top producers committed to quality and tradition. A wine worth discovering, for those who appreciate depth, identity, and elegance.
