Barolo
Barolo: The King of Italian Red Wines
If you’re a red wine lover, you can’t miss Barolo — the iconic red wine from Piedmont. On Grandi Bottiglie you’ll find a curated selection of authentic Barolo wines from the most historic producers of the appellation, ready to be shipped worldwide.
But what makes Barolo so special?
A Great Red Born in the Langhe
Barolo is made exclusively from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, grown in a small area in the Langhe hills, in northern Italy. It stands out for its garnet red color with orange reflections, intense aromas of dried roses, cherries, tar, truffles, and spices, and a powerful, structured palate with robust tannins and remarkable aging potential.
Produced in just a few municipalities — Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga d’Alba, and others nearby — each area lends unique nuances to the wine. For example, La Morra often gives a more elegant, floral profile, while Serralunga is known for bold, long-lived Barolos.
What Are the Best Barolo Vintages?
Among the most celebrated vintages in recent decades: 1982, 1990, 1996, 2001, 2004, 2010, 2013 and 2016. These are known for their exceptional balance, complexity, and aging potential.
How Long Does Barolo Age?
Barolo DOCG wines must age at least 38 months, including 18 in oak. Barolo Riserva must age 62 months, with the same minimum of 18 in barrel. Thanks to Nebbiolo’s natural acidity and tannic structure, well-made Barolos can evolve beautifully for decades.
How to Pair Barolo?
Barolo is perfect with rich and flavorful dishes: braised beef, game, truffle-based recipes, mature cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Gorgonzola, and traditional Piedmontese cuisine like brasato al Barolo. Serve it at 18–20°C in a large glass to fully enjoy its bouquet.
How Much Does a Good Barolo Cost?
Prices vary widely: you can find excellent bottles between €30–€50, while labels from prestigious producers can easily reach €70–€100 or more. Keep in mind that price doesn’t always guarantee quality — our selection aims to offer the best value for each price range.
