Ghemme
Ghemme DOCG is one of the great red wines of Alto Piemonte, produced in the namesake town in the province of Novara. Deeply rooted in the local winemaking tradition, Ghemme is crafted mainly from Nebbiolo grapes, often blended with small amounts of Vespolina and Uva Rara, giving the wine complexity, balance, and local character.
The Ghemme terroir is unique: vineyards lie on glacial morainic soils, rich in sand and clay, resulting in wines with refined aromas, structured tannins, and marked minerality. A fresh, breezy microclimate ensures slow and optimal ripening of the grapes, enhancing both aromatic expression and acidity.
By law, Ghemme DOCG must undergo long aging periods: at least 34 months for the standard version (including 18 in wood), and 48 months for the Riserva, making it one of Italy’s most age-worthy reds. In the glass, Ghemme reveals a garnet-red color with complex aromas of red fruits, sweet spices, dried herbs, and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it’s elegant, persistent, and multi-layered, with refined tannins and vibrant acidity that ensures excellent cellaring potential.
Though historically overshadowed by more famous Piedmontese appellations like Barolo or Barbaresco, Ghemme is gaining renewed attention from collectors and connoisseurs thanks to passionate producers focused on traditional, terroir-driven winemaking.
At Grandi Bottiglie, you’ll find a curated selection of Ghemme DOCG wines from top vintages, magnum formats, collectible Riservas, and more. Perfect for pairing with hearty dishes, game, or aged cheeses—or simply to forget in the cellar and rediscover after years of quiet evolution.
