Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante “Calliope” – Cantina Cieck

Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante “Calliope” stands as one of the finest expressions of Cantina Cieck’s craftsmanship, a sparkling wine that perfectly balances tradition, innovation, and elegance. Its story dates back to the mid-1990s, when Remo Cieck, inspired by the great French Maisons, decided to create a Riserva Metodo Classico capable of combining the natural freshness of Erbaluce with the complexity imparted by oak and long aging on the lees.

The name “Calliope” — the muse of epic poetry — pays tribute to Guido Gozzano, the poet celebrated at the Castle of Agliè, where this cuvée was first conceived. The grapes come from pergola-trained vines about 30 years old, rooted in moraine soils at around 320 meters above sea level, facing southeast. This terroir ensures optimal sun exposure and excellent drainage, resulting in grapes with vibrant acidity and intense aromatic character — perfect for fine sparkling wines.

After a gentle pressing, one-third of the must ferments in small oak barrels, remaining on fine lees for about nine months to gain complexity and structure. The remaining must ferments in stainless steel to preserve the crisp varietal purity of Erbaluce. Once blended, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, followed by 48 months of aging on the lees — a long and patient process that refines its aromatic richness and texture.

Every bottle is carefully hand-riddled on traditional pupitres and disgorged manually, then allowed to rest for a further six months before release. The result is a sparkling wine of great finesse and harmony.

In the glass, Calliope shines with straw-yellow hues and golden reflections, animated by a fine, persistent perlage. The bouquet reveals aromas of golden apple, vanilla, pineapple, and wildflowers, enriched by subtle notes of toasted bread and yeast. On the palate, it is creamy, structured, and fresh, with a lively acidity and a long, elegant finish.

Calliope is both sophisticated and versatile: ideal as an aperitif, yet equally perfect throughout an elegant meal. It pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, and delicate white meats, offering a refined expression of Piedmontese sparkling winemaking.
