The Côte de Nuits-Villages 2023 by Sylvie Esmonin is a classic expression of Pinot Noir from the prestigious Côte de Nuits area in Burgundy, one of the world’s most celebrated regions for great red wines.
This cuvée comes from vineyards located near Gevrey-Chambertin, an appellation famous for producing structured yet elegant Pinot Noir wines. The Sylvie Esmonin domaine covers about five hectares, with several parcels planted decades ago by Sylvie’s grandfather and father. The advanced age of the vines contributes to lower yields and greater concentration in the grapes, enhancing the wine’s depth and complexity.
Vineyard management follows a careful and respectful approach, aiming to preserve the natural balance of the vines and the identity of the terroir. The focus is on achieving optimal ripeness while maintaining the freshness and aromatic purity typical of Burgundy Pinot Noir.
In the cellar, traditional winemaking techniques are applied. After harvest the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed, then fermented in open wooden vats. This method allows a delicate extraction of color, aromas and tannins while preserving the finesse of the fruit.
The wine is then transferred to oak barrels of different ages, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and aging. Using barrels of various vintages allows the winemaker to add complexity and structure without overpowering the natural fruit character of the Pinot Noir.
In the glass, the Côte de Nuits-Villages 2023 shows a bright ruby color, typical of Burgundy Pinot Noir. The aromatic profile is dominated by fresh red and dark fruit notes, including cherry, blackberry and wild berries. With aeration, subtle spicy nuances and light earthy tones emerge, adding depth and complexity to the bouquet.
On the palate the wine is well balanced and vibrant, supported by lively acidity and fine, silky tannins. The texture is elegant and precise, leading to a persistent finish that echoes the wine’s fruit-driven aromas.
