The Brézème Côte du Rhône AOC 2019 by Èric Texier is a compelling expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, crafted with a philosophy that places terroir above intervention. Before becoming a winemaker, Èric Texier worked as a nuclear engineer. His decision to leave that career led him to restore forgotten vineyards and embrace traditional winemaking methods, producing certified organic wines that faithfully express their origin.
The grapes come from the historic Brézème vineyard, a small and distinctive hillside located on the right bank of the Rhône River near the confluence with the Drôme. This rare terroir is defined by limestone marl soils, southern exposure and a cool microclimate shaped by strong northern winds flowing through the valley. Nearly abandoned during the twentieth century, Brézème has regained recognition thanks to Texier's commitment to preserving its viticultural heritage.
The vineyard is farmed organically without synthetic chemicals, while every operation is carried out manually. Winemaking follows a low-intervention approach, beginning with a short pre-fermentation maceration, followed by whole-cluster spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks for approximately eight days. The wine is then aged for twelve months in large 24-hectolitre oak casks before being bottled without fining or filtration, preserving both texture and purity.
In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red colour. The bouquet opens with red and black berries, Mediterranean herbs, black pepper and delicate spice. The palate is vibrant and finely balanced, supported by bright acidity that enhances freshness and drinkability. Silky tannins and a long, savoury finish underline the elegance and authenticity of this distinctive Syrah.
The Brézème by Èric Texier pairs beautifully with rich pasta dishes, roasted meats, game birds and aged cheeses. It is particularly enjoyable with traditional rabbit dishes such as Coniglio all'Ischitana. Serve at 18–20°C. A refined organic Rhône Syrah that captures the unique identity of one of the valley's most fascinating historic terroirs.
