Vosne-Romanée "Les Hautes Maizières" 2023 Domaine Édouard Confuron
The 2023 Vosne-Romanée « Les Hautes Maizières » is one of the most representative wines of Édouard Confuron’s personal approach. A sixth-generation member of the Confuron-Gindre family of Vosne-Romanée, Édouard established his own micro-domaine with the 2021 vintage, developing a distinctive style based on precise and low-intervention interpretations of the Côte de Nuits.
The Les Hautes Maizières parcel is particularly compelling: just 0.18 hectares, planted with vines averaging around 60 years of age, in a privileged position below Les Suchots and Echézeaux Grand Cru, immediately alongside Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. Its central Vosne-Romanée location helps explain the wine’s distinctly classical and refined character.
In the cellar, Confuron follows an extremely restrained approach, with the wine vinified without added sulphur. Compared with Pré de la Folie, whose whole-cluster character is more overtly aromatic, Les Hautes Maizières shows a more composed and elegant personality. Oak is used discreetly, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the centre of the wine.
The colour is a medium crimson ruby. The nose combines elegant aromas of red cherry, raspberry, strawberry and anise, with subtle spice in the background. The fruit is less ripe and opulent than that of Pré de la Folie, but this gives the wine greater precision and a more classical Burgundy character.
The palate is silky, vibrant and beautifully enveloping. The initial impression is soft, with slightly broader red-fruit flavours and a generous sense of volume. Freshness and saline energy then drive the wine towards a remarkably persistent finish, where pepper and mineral notes accompany the returning flavours of cherry and raspberry.
This is a Vosne-Romanée that does not rely on sheer concentration, but on finesse, energy and persistence. The vineyard’s privileged position and Confuron’s sensitive winemaking combine to create a particularly elegant expression of the village: profound without heaviness, intense without sacrificing freshness.
