The 2023 Côtes du Rhône L'Astrolabe by Domaine Duseigneur comes from the Laudun area, at the western edge of the Lirac appellation, where the vineyard lies at around 160 metres above sea level on north-facing slopes. The Syrah vines are approximately 50 years old and grow in soils made primarily of deep sand and sandstone. This combination favours a more lifted and refined expression of the grape, with freshness and aromatic definition at its core.
L'Astrolabe reflects the approach of Domaine Duseigneur, a Southern Rhône estate closely associated with organic and biodynamic viticulture. Its name refers to the ancient navigational instrument used by sailors to find their way by observing the stars. The image is also central to the estate's philosophy, symbolising the relationship between the vineyard, natural cycles and the influence of the cosmos on biodynamic practices.
The winemaking is deliberately understated. The grapes are fully destemmed before fermentation in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, allowing the fruit and site to remain at the centre of the wine's identity. L'Astrolabe then spends 12 months ageing in old French oak barrels, where the wine gains texture and complexity while maintaining the clarity of its fruit.
In the glass, the L'Astrolabe 2023 offers a precise and layered interpretation of Syrah. Blackberries and dark raspberries lead into violet, pepper and liquorice, accompanied by subtle balsamic nuances. The palate is medium to full-bodied, fresh and well proportioned. Fine tannins provide structure without heaviness, while a mineral and gently spicy finish brings length and definition.
This Southern Rhône red wine has a distinctly gastronomic character. Its combination of freshness, fine tannins and savoury depth makes it a natural partner for roasted meats, lamb, Mediterranean cuisine, game birds and dishes with aromatic spices. Its balance also gives it the structure to develop further complexity in bottle.
L'Astrolabe is therefore a refined interpretation of Southern Rhône Syrah, where fruit remains at the centre, oak works quietly in the background and the character of the vineyard emerges through freshness, tension and depth.
