The Monthélie Rouge 2021 from Domaine Pierre Morey captures the understated elegance of one of Burgundy's most discreet appellations. Nestled between Volnay, Meursault and Auxey-Duresses in the Côte de Beaune, Monthélie enjoys a cooler north-eastern exposure that allows Pinot Noir to ripen slowly, producing wines defined by freshness, finesse and remarkable balance.
Pierre Morey is regarded as one of Burgundy's leading advocates of organic and biodynamic viticulture. Following his celebrated tenure as cellar master at Domaine Leflaive, he dedicated his own estate to expressing the individuality of each vineyard through respectful farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. The vines for this cuvée average 45 years of age and grow in clay-limestone soils, planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare, naturally limiting yields and enhancing concentration.
The grapes are fully destemmed before a gentle crushing, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in oak vats. Skin maceration is carefully managed to preserve elegance and aromatic purity. The wine then matures for twelve months in French oak pièces, only a small proportion of which are new, before spending an additional four months in stainless steel tanks to refine its balance and precision.
In the glass, it reveals a bright ruby colour. The nose opens with vibrant aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild berries, layered with delicate floral nuances and subtle mineral notes that reflect its limestone origins. The palate is graceful yet structured, supported by silky tannins and lively acidity that bring both energy and harmony. Its finish is long, savoury and persistent, leaving gentle earthy nuances that underline the authenticity of the terroir.
With a production of only 1,860 bottles, the Monthélie Rouge 2021 is a pure and elegant interpretation of Burgundy, showcasing Pierre Morey's commitment to craftsmanship, precision and the timeless identity of Pinot Noir.
