Maranges 1er Cru “Clos des Loyeres” 2023 Fiona Leroy
The Maranges 1er Cru “Clos des Loyeres” 2023 is one of the most captivating expressions from Fiona Leroy, who has been running her 2.7-hectare estate biodynamically since 2017. Every vine is farmed by hand, without chemicals, and with a deep respect for biodiversity. The Clos des Loyeres vineyard, only 0.22 hectares in size, faces south and was planted in 1950, providing naturally low yields and exceptional fruit concentration.
Winemaking reflects Fiona’s minimalist philosophy: hand harvesting in small crates, gentle pneumatic pressing, spontaneous fermentation using mostly whole clusters, ageing for 12 months in old barrels, and no filtration. Only a tiny amount of sulphites is added before bottling to ensure stability. This approach results in a wine driven by purity and texture, offering an enticing bouquet of black cherry, red berries, subtle spices and earthy undertones, enhanced by a delicate touch of old oak.
The palate is medium-bodied, silky and vibrant, with a velvety structure and refreshing acidity. Once decanted, it reveals remarkable depth and energy, showing layers of fruit and tension that make it both charming and expressive. The long, sapid finish captures the essence of southern Côte de Beaune. Ideal with most meat dishes, Burgundian cheeses or grilled seasonal vegetables, this Premier Cru showcases Fiona Leroy’s artisanal precision and her ability to let the terroir speak with clarity.
