Barbera d’Alba 2023 Giovanni Sordo
The Barbera d’Alba DOC 2023 by Giovanni Sordo is produced from vineyards located in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba, two renowned areas of the Langhe where Barbera reaches excellent aromatic expression.
The vineyards lie between 250 and 300 metres above sea level, with south-west exposure, ensuring optimal ripening. The soils are calcareous and clay-based, providing structure, depth and natural freshness.
The vines, aged between 15 and 25 years, are trained on vertical trellises with traditional Guyot pruning, at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Yields of approximately 80 quintals per hectare guarantee balance and varietal clarity.
Vinification involves crushing and destemming, followed by a submerged-cap maceration of around two weeks, depending on the vintage. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 28°C, preserving fruit purity.
The wine matures for 6 months in stainless steel, without oak influence, and is then bottle-aged for 3 months before release.
In the glass, it shows a bright ruby red colour, gradually developing garnet reflections over time. The bouquet is delicate yet intense and vinous, with notes of ripe red fruit.
On the palate, it is warm, full-bodied and complex, yet dry and well-balanced, supported by a lively acidity that enhances drinkability. Best served at 18–20°C, the Barbera d’Alba 2023 by Giovanni Sordo pairs beautifully with light appetisers, mildly seasoned cured meats, fresh cheeses and even shellfish.
