Picolit 2016 Scarbolo Sergio
The Picolit 2016 from Scarbolo Sergio is a distinguished expression of Friuli’s sweet wine heritage. Picolit is an ancient local white grape, cultivated since Roman times, famous for its small, low-yield berries due to partial flower abortion, producing loose clusters. This natural characteristic gives the wine extraordinary aromatic concentration and a rich, velvety body, making it one of the most prestigious sweet wines of the region.
The harvest is entirely manual, with careful selection of the grapes for drying. Grapes are left to dry for approximately 20 days in controlled rooms, concentrating sugars and aromas while preserving freshness. Afterward, the grapes undergo a gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation, creating a perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and structure.
Visually, the Picolit 2016 shows an intense antique golden yellow, radiant in the glass. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet: initial aromas of honey and custard give way to ripe peach and apricot, accompanied by subtle floral notes of broom and linden. On the palate, the wine is sweet yet balanced, harmonious, full-bodied, and velvety, with a persistent finish that mirrors the aromatic complexity perceived at the nose. Integrated acidity provides freshness and elegance, making each sip long and pleasurable.
Culinary-wise, this Picolit excels on its own for contemplative tasting, but it also pairs beautifully with delicate seafood such as oysters and sea truffles, rich, aged cheeses like Formadi Frant, Gorgonzola, or mature Taleggio, and dry pastries or baked sweets. The wine tells the story of Friulian viticulture and Scarbolo Sergio’s dedication to preserving traditional varietals while achieving premium quality.
