Saumur-Champigny Rouge 2022 La Porte Saint Jean
The Saumur-Champigny Rouge by La Porte Saint Jean is a superb expression of 100% Cabernet Franc, crafted by Sylvain Dittière in the Loire Valley, specifically in the village of Montreuil-Bellay.
Grapes come from organically farmed vineyards planted on sandy, silty and clay soils. Dittière, a former apprentice at legendary estates like Gauby, Thierry Germain, Château Yvonne and Clos Rougeard, brings a minimalist and natural approach to winemaking.
Fermentation takes place in tronconic wooden vats, with no added sulfur, followed by 18 months of aging, 70% of which is in barrels sourced from Clos Rougeard and Château Haut-Brion, and the remaining 30% in tanks. Only 2g/l of sulfur is added at bottling.
The result is a red wine of stunning aromatic depth, revealing notes of red fruit, spice, and subtle balsamic hints. The palate shows a silky texture, fine structure and remarkable finesse, making it one of the most compelling expressions of Cabernet Franc from the Loire—comparable to the best Clos Rougeard wines.
This bottle represents the only négoce cuvée of the domaine, made with grapes from a long-standing certified organic partner grower.
