Orvieto Secco Bio 2022 Sergio Mottura
The Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco Bio 2022 is one of the most authentic expressions of traditional Italian white wine, crafted by one of the most historic producers of the Orvieto region. The estate is located in Civitella d’Agliano, in Lazio, at the southern edge of the Orvieto DOC, a unique area where Umbria and Lazio meet along the Tiber River.
The Mottura family has owned the estate since 1933, but viticultural evidence in the area dates back to 1292, when high-quality wines were already documented in these volcanic hills.
The blend consists of 50% Procanico and 50% Grechetto, two varieties perfectly suited to the local environment. The soils are of volcanic origin with alluvial deposits from the Vulsini volcanic complex and Lake Bolsena, composed of 40% clay, 40% sand, and 20% silt, providing balance between structure and freshness.
The vineyards, planted after 1990 and trained in Guyot system at 5,000 vines per hectare, are fully estate-owned and harvested by hand in stages: Grechetto in early September and Procanico in early October. Yields are kept at around 70 quintals per hectare to ensure concentration and quality.
Winemaking is clean and precise: gentle pressing, static settling, and fermentation in stainless steel, followed by about 6 months of aging on fine lees in steel tanks. This preserves aromatic purity while enhancing texture and salinity.
On the nose, the wine is fragrant and direct, with fresh fruit and floral hints. On the palate, it shows structure, balance, and a long savory finish, defining its gastronomic vocation.
This is a wine made for the table and convivial moments, an Orvieto in its most authentic form: immediate yet complex, traditional yet contemporary, with an aging potential of up to 10 years.
