Barolo Monprivato 2021 Giovanni Sordo
The Barolo Monprivato DOCG 2021 by Giovanni Sordo comes from vineyards located in Castiglione Falletto, one of the most historic and prestigious villages of the Barolo appellation. The vines are planted on south-west facing slopes, between 240 and 320 metres above sea level, ensuring optimal ripening and aromatic concentration.
The soils are calcareous, composed of grey-blue marls of marine origin from the Miocene period (Helvetian formation), typical of the Tertiary era. This geological structure provides the wine with depth, complexity and remarkable ageing potential.
The vineyard, with an average age of 35 years, is trained on vertical trellises with traditional Guyot pruning, at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Yields of 75–80 quintals per hectare allow for a balanced yet expressive Nebbiolo.
Vinification follows a traditional approach: destemming and crushing, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a long submerged-cap maceration lasting 4 to 7 weeks, depending on the vintage. Natural malolactic fermentation occurs at 20°C, followed by 2–4 months of storage in stainless steel.
Ageing continues for 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, then 4–6 months in stainless steel, and at least 6 months in bottle, allowing the wine to fully harmonise before release.
In the glass, the wine impresses with its intense colour, featuring bright garnet and ruby hues. The alcohol structure is evident in the pronounced tears and legs. The bouquet is rich and persistent, with notes of black cherry, refined floral nuances, and with time, ethereal hints of resin and sweet spices.
On the palate, it is powerful yet balanced, with firm but polished tannins. The Barolo Monprivato 2021 by Giovanni Sordo is a wine of strong identity and long ageing potential, ideal with red meats, game, rich dishes and aged cheeses.
