Barolo Monvigliero 2021 Giovanni Sordo
The Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2021 by Giovanni Sordo comes from the Verduno area, within one of the most historic and celebrated crus of the Barolo appellation, renowned for its elegance, aromatic finesse and distinctive character.
The vineyards are exposed to south and south-east, at elevations between 280 and 320 metres above sea level, allowing for gradual ripening and excellent aromatic definition. The soil is fairly loose, composed of light, fine and relatively dry marls, belonging to the Tortonian geological formation, a defining feature of the Monvigliero terroir.
The vines, aged 35 to 40 years, are trained on vertical trellises with traditional Guyot pruning, at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Yields of 75–80 quintals per hectare ensure balance and expressive clarity.
Vinification follows a classic method: destemming and crushing, fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a long submerged-cap maceration lasting 4 to 7 weeks, depending on the vintage. Natural malolactic fermentation takes place at 20°C, followed by 2–4 months of storage in stainless steel.
Ageing continues for 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, then 4–6 months in stainless steel, and at least 6 months in bottle, allowing the wine to fully integrate and evolve.
In the glass, the wine shows a beautiful, elegant colour, never overly intense, yet remarkably stable over time. The bouquet is rich, broad and persistent, recalling fresh fruit, especially small berries, along with sweet spices, mountain hay and forest floor notes.
On the palate, the structure is refined and well-defined, with tannins and acidity in perfect balance, offering harmony, freshness and long ageing potential. The Barolo Monvigliero 2021 by Giovanni Sordo fully lives up to the historic reputation of this great cru, pairing beautifully with red meats, roasts, traditional Piedmontese dishes and aged cheeses.
