Carema “Sole e Roccia” 2020 Monte Maletto
Carema “Sole e Roccia” 2020 by Monte Maletto is a refined, characterful red wine from one of Piedmont’s most dramatic and heroic appellations: Carema. The wine’s name echoes a quote from the Italian writer Mario Soldati, who described Carema wine as having “the taste of sun and rock”—a perfect metaphor for its origin.
Monte Maletto is a small artisan winery cultivating just 1.8 hectares of vineyard on steep stone terraces, using the traditional “topia” pergola system. The vines are grown organically, without chemicals, and tended entirely by hand in true heroic viticulture fashion. This wine is made from 95% Nebbiolo (Picotendro and Pugnet clones) and 5% Nero d’Ala, reflecting the historical composition of the zone.
Only 70% of the grapes are destemmed; the fermentation includes 40 days of skin contact, followed by 18 months of aging in used barriques, resulting in a wine that is structured yet precise.
In the glass, it shows a ruby red core with garnet hues. The nose opens with balsamic notes, wild berries, and hints of vermouth herbs and alpine spice. The palate is fresh, sapid, and persistent, with polished tannins and a mineral core. A truly elegant expression of mountain-grown Nebbiolo, honoring the rocky soul of Carema.
