Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore 2021 Mario Marengo
The Nebbiolo d’Alba “Valmaggiore” 2021 by Mario Marengo is one of the most graceful and expressive interpretations of Nebbiolo from the Roero, a territory known for its sandy, marine-origin soils capable of giving the variety an elegant and subtle character. The Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva Valmaggiore, located in Vezza d’Alba, is among the most renowned crus in the appellation and offers ideal conditions for producing refined and aromatic wines.
Mario Marengo, whose winery is based in La Morra and known for its Barolo production, brings his deep knowledge of Nebbiolo across the Tanaro river to explore a different stylistic expression — fresher, more delicate and immediately enjoyable. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with skin maceration aimed at extracting finesse rather than power. The wine then matures for about one year in French oak barriques, followed by bottle ageing to ensure harmony and elegance.
In the glass, the wine displays a bright ruby-red colour with slight garnet hues. The bouquet is refined and layered, offering aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, cherry, along with hints of dried flowers, herbal notes, vanilla, liquorice and soft oriental spices. On the palate it is medium-bodied, smooth and vibrant, supported by ultra-fine tannins and a lively mineral backbone. The finish is savory, fresh and persistent, reflecting the sandy soils of its origin.
This Nebbiolo is perfect for those who appreciate finesse, balance and aromatic clarity. It pairs beautifully with flavourful first courses, roasted poultry and delicate white meats. A polished, inviting wine that showcases the authentic soul of the Roero’s Valmaggiore cru.
