Barbera d’Alba “Pugnane” 2021 Mario Marengo
The Barbera d’Alba “Pugnane” 2021 by Mario Marengo is a refined and contemporary expression of one of Piedmont’s most iconic grape varieties. It comes from an outstanding vintage that provided ideal conditions for grapes of remarkable concentration and balance. The fruit originates from the renowned Pugnane vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, where the fifteen-year-old vines grow on highly suited soils capable of delivering depth, purity and an unmistakable territorial character.
Following a careful harvest, vinification follows the traditional Marengo approach, aiming to preserve the natural elegance and vibrant fruit profile of Barbera. Ageing takes place in used French barriques for ten months, a choice that adds softness and complexity without masking the grape’s freshness and energy. In the glass, it shines with a bright, intense ruby hue. The bouquet opens with ripe dark berries—plum, blackberry and cherry—enhanced by warm spices, earthy undertones and a gentle balsamic trace.
On the palate, the “Pugnane” stands out for its harmonious balance: rich and full-bodied yet smooth and approachable, with a refreshing acidity that enhances depth and drinkability. The texture is silky and rounded, leading to a long, flavorful finish marked by fruit and spice echoes. Perfect with meat dishes, roasted veal or traditional Piedmontese cuisine, this Barbera d’Alba is a memorable wine that captures the finesse and expressive charm of the Langhe.
