Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vigneto Sant’Eusanio 2021 Valle Reale
The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo “Vigneto Sant’Eusanio” 2021 by Valle Reale is among the most authentic, extreme, and distinctive expressions of high-altitude Montepulciano. Sourced from a tiny 2-hectare plot located at 497 meters above sea level – the highest in the entire estate – this wine reflects the wild, mountainous spirit of inland Abruzzo. Sant’Eusanio is a true vineyard-garden nestled among dense pine forests that shape its microclimate. The poor, stony soil, combined with a north-facing exposure and dramatic day-night temperature shifts, creates harsh conditions that slow grape ripening and enhance acidity, aromatic intensity, and structure.
Planted in 2002, the Montepulciano vines yield fruit of great depth and character. The grapes are harvested at full ripeness and vinified solely in stainless steel tanks, a deliberate choice to preserve varietal purity and avoid any masking from oak. The resulting wine is deep and vibrant, with a rich ruby-red color tinged with violet hues. On the nose, it unfolds in layers: floral hints of violets and geraniums, rich notes of wild berry jam, and earthy undertones of roots, moss, humus, carob, and balsamic herbs.
The palate is powerful yet agile, with a solid tannic structure that is firm but never harsh, supported by lively acidity and a strong savory backbone. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a clean, spicy impression that lingers. This is not a Montepulciano that seeks softness or roundness, as coastal versions often do. Instead, it embraces a more vertical, austere, and terroir-driven identity. A red wine of bold personality, capable of graceful aging and of revealing new nuances over time.
The Sant’Eusanio vineyard is one of Valle Reale’s crown jewels, and this cru represents a bold statement of intent: to craft wines that speak the language of the mountains – precise, intense, and full of character.
