Fleurie 2023 Jean Foillard
In modern Beaujolais, Jean Foillard stands as one of the defining figures of the natural wine movement. Part of the historic group with Lapierre, Breton and Thévenet, he helped reshape the identity of the region in the 1980s, strongly influenced by the philosophy of Jules Chauvet.
Fleurie 2023 comes from the Champagne lieu-dit, one of the most expressive sites within the appellation. Its pink granite-derived sandy soils bring finesse and aromatic lift, while preserving the depth and structure typical of top Gamay expressions.
The vines are farmed organically, with hand harvesting and careful grape selection. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with semi-carbonic maceration, a traditional Beaujolais technique designed to preserve fruit purity and aromatic clarity.
Ageing lasts around 9 months in oak barrels, with no fining or filtration. The wine is bottled as a living expression of the vineyard, maintaining energy and definition throughout.
In the glass, it shows a pale ruby hue. The nose is expressive yet delicate, with cherry, blueberry and violet, layered with thyme, subtle spice and a faint smoky nuance. The palate is smooth and linear, carried by fine tannins and a juicy, vibrant acidity that extends the finish.
Fleurie 2023 is a study in balance without construction: elegant yet never fragile, deep yet weightless, immediate yet capable of unfolding over time in the glass.
