For centuries, Erbaluce was primarily known as a blending grape or as the base for sweet passito wines. Over time, however, its reputation has evolved dramatically, and today it is increasingly recognised as one of Piedmont’s most distinctive dry white wines. Producers such as Matteo Ravera Chion have played an important role in this transformation by highlighting the grape’s natural freshness, complexity and ageing potential.
The name ‘Nramià comes from the local dialect and refers to the word “copper-coloured”, evoking the unique shades that appear on Erbaluce grape clusters as they reach full ripeness. The term also reflects the deep cultural roots of the wine and its connection to the traditions of the Canavese region.
The grapes come from historic vineyards located in Palazzo Canavese, on the slopes of the Serra di Ivrea, one of the most prestigious areas for Erbaluce cultivation. Managed according to natural farming principles, the estate has also begun the process of organic certification, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable viticulture and environmental stewardship.
The aromatic profile is both distinctive and elegant. The nose reveals delicate floral aromas, intertwined with hints of wet stone, underground minerality and subtle earthy nuances. On the palate, the wine is driven by bright acidity, a hallmark of Erbaluce, accompanied by flavours of nectarine, papaya and ripe yellow fruits, enriched by balsamic touches and persistent mineral notes.
The texture is medium-bodied yet substantial, delivering depth, energy and impressive persistence. Every sip reflects the unique terroir of Canavese and demonstrates the remarkable versatility of Erbaluce as a fine white wine capable of developing additional complexity with bottle age.
