The Crozes-Hermitage Rouge Accroche-Cœur 2020 by Pierre Jean Villa is a captivating expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, one of the most celebrated red wines of the region. This cuvée represents a harmonious blend of power and elegance, crafted from meticulously farmed vineyards located on fluvio-glacial soils composed of rolled pebbles and loess, which impart minerality and character to the wine.
Pierre Jean Villa, who began his career in Burgundy before working alongside Rhône masters such as Yves Cuilleron and Pierre Gaillard, has developed a precise, terroir-driven approach. For Accroche-Cœur, the grapes are harvested at full ripeness, carefully destemmed and sorted, then undergo a two-week maceration in vats and demi-muids. The wine is subsequently aged for one year in 500-liter demi-muids, which provides structure and depth while preserving the vibrant freshness of Syrah.
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby-red color. The nose is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe red berries, blackcurrant, blackberry and hints of violet, enhanced by notes of black pepper, sweet spices and subtle toasted undertones. The bouquet is elegant, layered and immediately inviting.
On the palate, the Accroche-Cœur 2020 reveals silky, well-integrated tannins and a full-bodied yet graceful structure. Concentrated fruit flavors combine with freshness, delivering balance and finesse. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering spice and fruit notes that highlight its complexity.
This wine is enjoyable in its youth but also has excellent ageing potential. At the table, it pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, game dishes, roasted lamb or aged cheeses, making it a versatile and gastronomic choice.
