Chassagne-Montrachet 2023 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard
The Chassagne-Montrachet 2023 by Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard comes from the heart of the Côte de Beaune and perfectly illustrates the domaine’s longstanding connection with this celebrated Burgundy appellation. It is a Chardonnay defined by richness of texture, finesse and mineral precision, combining generosity with a clear sense of place.
One of the defining characteristics of this cuvée is the origin of its fruit. The grapes are hand harvested from several parcels spread across Chassagne-Montrachet: En Journoblot, La Bergerie, Les Voillenots Dessus, Voillenot Dessous, Les Masures, Les Essarts and Pot Bois. The vines, planted between 1960 and 1989, grow on clay-limestone soils, providing an important foundation for the wine’s structure and mineral character. By blending fruit from different parcels, Fontaine-Gagnard creates a Chassagne-Montrachet with considerable depth and nuance, where the individual characteristics of each site contribute to the final complexity.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is one of the established names of traditional Chassagne-Montrachet. Founded in 1985 by Laurence Gagnard and Richard Fontaine, the estate has grown to approximately 12 hectares, predominantly around Chassagne-Montrachet, with additional vineyards in Volnay and Pommard. Since 2007, Céline Fontaine has played a central role in the domaine, continuing the family heritage while bringing a contemporary sensibility to its Burgundian identity.
Winemaking remains deliberately traditional. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts, while the white wines are aged for around one year in oak barrels. Oak is treated as a tool for integration rather than as a dominant flavour, allowing the fruit, texture and mineral character of the wine to remain at the forefront. The approach reflects Fontaine-Gagnard’s philosophy of producing wines marked by purity, finesse and fidelity to their individual terroirs.
In the glass, the Chassagne-Montrachet 2023 shows an intense and generous personality. The palate is immediately expressive and enveloping, developing into a broad, rich and rounded texture, where ripe fruit meets a distinct mineral thread. Despite its richness, the wine retains balance and energy, gradually revealing greater layers of complexity as the finish unfolds.
It is precisely this balance between volume and freshness, richness and minerality that makes Fontaine-Gagnard’s Chassagne-Montrachet such a compelling expression of the appellation: a Burgundy white that is immediately seductive yet possesses the depth and structure to evolve gracefully in bottle.
