Bastianich Vespa Bianco 2017
The Vespa Bianco 2017 by Bastianich Winery is one of the signature wines of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. This elegant and refined white wine is crafted from a blend of Chardonnay (45%), Sauvignon Blanc (45%), and a small percentage of Picolit (10%). The goal of this cuvée is to showcase the potential of Friuli’s terroir, combining the elegance of Chardonnay, the aromatic freshness of Sauvignon, and the velvety roundness of Picolit.
The grapes come from vineyards in Buttrio and Premariacco, rooted in soils rich in calcareous marl (ponca) with layers of rock and clay. Harvesting is carried out separately for each variety, with a meticulous grape selection. Vinification involves fermentation partly in stainless steel and partly in oak barrels of 500 and 4000 liters. The wine then ages for 12 months on the fine lees in both steel and oak, gaining depth and softness, followed by at least one year of bottle ageing.
In the glass, the Vespa Bianco reveals an intense straw-yellow color. The bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of wildflowers, honey, ripe pear, and apricot, enhanced by subtle mineral notes. On the palate, it is elegant, velvety, and fresh, perfectly balanced between sapidity and roundness, with a long and harmonious finish.
The name “Vespa” refers to the wasps that appear in the vineyards when the grapes reach full maturity, symbolizing the natural balance of the ecosystem. Founded in 1997 by Joe Bastianich, the winery represents both a tribute to his mother Lidia’s homeland and a pursuit of excellence rooted in Friulian tradition. Today, Vespa Bianco is considered one of Friuli’s most iconic whites, known for its longevity and ability to evolve beautifully over time. It pairs wonderfully with seafood, shellfish, white meats, and gourmet cuisine, embodying the perfect fusion of tradition, terroir, and modern winemaking.
