Sauternes “Castelnau” 2010 Château Suduiraut
The Sauternes “Castelnau” 2010 from Château Suduiraut is one of the most captivating expressions of the great botrytised wines of Bordeaux. Although not the flagship cuvée of the estate, it is by no means a lesser wine: it stands out for its distinct identity, shaped by the meticulous selection of vineyard parcels and the centuries-old expertise of the Suduiraut family, whose winemaking tradition dates back to 1580. This label embodies the elegance, purity and balance that have made the château one of the most respected names in Sauternes.
Produced from a blend of Sémillon with a small share of Sauvignon Blanc, the wine is sourced from vineyards located south of Bordeaux, where clay, sand and gravel shape the character of the grapes. The proximity to the Garonne and Ciron rivers creates the perfect conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot responsible for concentrating sugars and generating the unmistakable aromas of Sauternes wines. Harvesting is carried out by hand with multiple passes, selecting only berries perfectly affected by noble rot.
The must then ages for around 15 months in barriques, 25% of which are new, allowing the natural sweetness to merge with subtle spicy and toasty notes. In the glass, it displays a bright golden hue. The aromatic profile is rich and refined, with candied fruit, honey, caramel, sweet spices and citrus accents layered over a delicate mineral core. On the palate, it is warm, velvety and persistent, offering depth, harmony and superb drinkability. A Sauternes of great charm, enjoyable now but destined to age beautifully.
