Saumur‑Champigny 2021 Domaine des Roches Neuves
The 2021 Saumur Champigny from Domaine des Roches Neuves is a pure expression of Cabernet Franc, showcasing the grape’s elegance and vibrancy in its ideal terroir: the Loire Valley. Here, thanks to a mild climate and soils rich in limestone and tuffeau, Cabernet Franc finds the perfect conditions to reveal its character through wines of freshness, depth, and precision.
The estate is based in Varrains and dates back to the mid-19th century. Since 1992, it has been guided by Thierry Germain — a visionary winemaker and committed practitioner of biodynamics. His approach focuses on soil vitality and transparent winemaking, with hand-harvesting, indigenous yeasts, and zero chemical inputs, allowing the wine to fully reflect the nuances of its origin.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, and ageing lasts about 4 months in a combination of steel and large wooden vats. This short, gentle maturation allows the Cabernet Franc to retain its aromatic clarity and natural energy.
In the glass, it presents a bright, luminous ruby red. The nose is pure and fragrant, revealing notes of red and black berries — currants, blueberries, and raspberries — enhanced by subtle balsamic hints, menthol tones, and touches of wild herbs. On the palate, it’s juicy and harmonious, with crunchy fruit, fresh acidity, and fine, silky tannins. The finish is clean and mineral, with a vibrant persistence that keeps the wine alive and mouthwatering.
This Saumur Champigny is a compelling introduction to the purest face of Loire Cabernet Franc: vibrant, honest, and full of life. Perfect alongside grilled white or red meats, delicate charcuterie, semi-aged cheeses, or herb-laced vegetarian dishes.
