Monsecco is a historic winery rooted in the northern Piedmont region of Italy, between the Novara hills and the banks of the Sesia River. Founded in 1872 in Gattinara, Monsecco has long been synonymous with age-worthy red wines based on Nebbiolo, a grape that thrives in this unique Alpine foothill terroir.

From the beginning, the estate has focused on low yields, meticulous grape selection, and long aging in large oak barrels, resulting in red wines of great structure, complexity, and longevity. During the 1970s, Monsecco’s wines gained traction among Italy’s finest wine shops and achieved international acclaim through prestigious importers — standing out as a niche label in a time when high-quality Italian reds were still relatively unknown.

Monsecco is a historic wine estate rooted in the hills of Northern Piedmont, in the province of Novara, nestled between the ancient terroirs of Gattinara, Ghemme, and Sizzano, and the banks of the Sesia River. Founded in 1872, the winery has passed through three centuries of winemaking, remaining a steadfast ambassador of the region’s traditional, age-worthy red wines, made from Nebbiolo and other native grapes.

At the heart of Monsecco’s identity lies Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna, supported in classic blends by Vespolina and Uva Rara, two indigenous varieties that add complexity, spice, and balance. The vineyards are planted on sandy, clay-rich, glacial moraine soils, which impart distinct minerality, tension, and refined tannins to the wines. The local microclimate, shaped by Alpine breezes and river currents, ensures excellent diurnal temperature variation, helping the grapes ripen slowly and retain freshness.

Throughout the 20th century, Monsecco quietly built a reputation among collectors and sommeliers as a benchmark for artisanal, long-lived wines from Alto Piemonte. The production remained small and focused, with careful vinification and lengthy aging in large oak casks, sometimes extending well beyond three years. In the 1970s, Monsecco wines began to appear in Italy’s top wine shops and gained visibility abroad through a handful of prestigious importers. In a time before fine Italian wine became mainstream, Monsecco was already a niche label for connoisseurs.

In 1993, the brand was acquired by Lorenzo Zanetta, a local entrepreneur who took on the legacy with the mission to preserve and elevate Monsecco’s enological heritage. Under his guidance, the winery has continued to focus on quality, authenticity, and terroir expression, working exclusively with local grape varieties and maintaining low yields and traditional methods.

Today, Monsecco produces a refined portfolio of high-quality red wines, including Ghemme, Gattinara, Sizzano, and single-vineyard selections like Pratogrande, all marked by elegance, structure, natural acidity, and ageability. These are wines made for collectors and serious enthusiasts — bottles that evolve beautifully over time and reflect a deep connection to place.

In an increasingly globalized and commercial wine world, Monsecco remains a beacon of tradition and local identity, upholding the values of slow, thoughtful winemaking and carrying the voice of Alto Piemonte into the future.
