MoreAbate Nero: the elegance of traditional method sparkling wines from Trentino
Founded in 1973 in Lavis, Trentino, Abate Nero was born from the vision of Luciano Lunelli and a group of wine experts eager to create premium sparkling wines using the traditional method. Named in homage to Dom Pérignon, the French abbot associated with the birth of Champagne, Abate Nero has carved out its own identity in the Italian Alps.
The first cuvée was released in 1976, setting the tone for decades of quality. After beginning in the historic de Schulthaus cellar—once used by Giulio Ferrari—the winery moved in 1980 to its current San Lazzaro location, better suited to meet the demands of a growing and ambitious production.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Abate Nero expanded its portfolio with high-end vintage labels like “Cuvée dell’Abate” and “Domini,” including a Blanc de Noirs (“Domini Nero”) and a refined Rosé.
Production remains small and entirely artisanal: every bottle is handled manually, and the wines rest on lees for extended aging, far beyond the category’s standard. The result is complex, structured, and elegant sparkling wines that reflect the alpine terroir of Trentino.
With vineyards ranging from 200 to 800 meters above sea level, the winery benefits from a unique climate and diverse soils that contribute to the finesse and longevity of its wines. Today, with around 70,000 bottles produced annually, Abate Nero stands as one of Trentino’s finest traditional method producers.
