Langhe Rosso 2017 Roagna
Roagna’s Langhe Rosso 2017 is a remarkable Piedmontese red wine crafted exclusively from young-vine Nebbiolo, sourced from the renowned Pajé and Pira vineyards, two of the most iconic crus of Barbaresco and Barolo.
Pajé, facing southwest in Barbaresco, features limestone-rich soils and benefits from the moderating influence of the Tanaro River. Pira, a monopole of the Roagna family since 1989, lies in Castiglione Falletto, exposed to the southeast and composed of calcareous marl, gray-blue clays, and sand.
The vines, up to 25 years old, are of massal selection, propagated directly from historic Roagna cuttings. The grapes are hand-harvested in October, with rigorous double sorting to ensure perfect fruit integrity. Fermentation takes place in large wooden vats with native yeasts, followed by submerged cap maceration (steccatura) for at least 60 days—an ancient technique preserving depth and finesse.
The wine is then aged in neutral oak casks for approximately 5 years, without filtration or fining. The result is an elegant and expressive Nebbiolo that captures the essence of Langhe terroir. Though labeled as “Langhe Rosso,” it offers the structure and soul of a true Barolo or Barbaresco, delivered in a more accessible, earlier-drinking style.
