Chénas Vieilles Vignes 2017 Domaine Anthony Thevenet
Nestled in the enchanting cru of Chénas, the Chénas Vieilles Vignes of Domaine Anthony Thevenet is an authentic expression of the potential of this little Beaujolais pearl. Here, in the north of the region, ancient Gamay vines feed on pink granite and sand soils, giving the wine a deep complexity and structure.
Chénas, the smallest of the ten crus of Beaujolais, is known for its history linked to the French oaks that once covered this land, and today it is renowned for its elegance and depth. Anthony's gently sloping parcel is composed of pink granite and sand soils, helping to create aromatic wines with a touch of pink, intensity and depth.
With 100% Gamay grapes sourced from fifty-year-old vines, hand harvesting plays an essential role in preserving the integrity of this cuvée. The fermentation process takes place with the whole bunch carbonic maceration technique for 20 days, without the addition of sulphites or external yeasts. Complete malolactic fermentation is followed by 7 months of aging in ancient oak barrels, without clarification or filtration.
The result is a wine that opens with intense aromas of blueberries and violets, which then give way to a symphony of red fruits, white pepper and delicate notes of sage on the palate. The depth and persistence of taste are testimony to the quality that this cru can offer. Surprisingly, Anthony Thevenet suggests that this wine could easily be mistaken for a Burgundy Pinot Noir in a blind tasting, and we agree.
