Carricante 2022 Calabretta
The Carricante 2022 by Calabretta is an extraordinarily elegant and mineral white wine, produced in the picturesque lands of Contrada Randazzo, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. This wine is made from pure Carricante grapes, an indigenous variety deeply rooted in the mineral-rich volcanic soils, where the vines, averaging 80 years of age, are cultivated with a low bush training system.
The Carricante grapes come from ancient vines located on steep slopes at the foot of Mount Etna, where the volcanic soil and altitude create an ideal environment for high-quality viticulture. The Calabretta family, custodians of local winemaking traditions since the early 1900s, manages the vineyard with deep respect for nature, using sustainable practices and enhancing biodiversity.
The grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand in the first decade of October. In the winery, the clusters are destemmed and undergo a brief cold maceration on the skins, followed by gentle pressing. Alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously in stainless steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine is aged for at least 24 months in stainless steel and then bottled, where it rests for an additional 8 months before being released.
The Carricante 2022 displays a bright straw yellow color, embellished with delicate golden hues. On the nose, it offers a complex and inviting bouquet, with intense aromas of ripe white fruit and citrus fruits like white peach, citron, and mandarin, accompanied by floral notes of white flowers, aromatic herbs, and subtle smoky hints. Saline and mineral notes add further depth to the aromatic profile.
On the palate, the wine is full and enveloping, with juicy complexity and vibrant freshness expressed through a savory vein, extending the finish and making it persistent. The mineral structure and saline freshness evoke the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea, giving the wine a unique and territorial character.
