Description

Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie 2015 Calabretta

The Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie 2015 by Calabretta is an enological masterpiece that embodies the power and beauty of Mount Etna. Produced by Massimiliano Calabretta in Randazzo, in the heart of Italy's most famous volcano, this wine is a sincere and uncompromising homage to the Etnean territory. The Nerello Mascalese grapes come from ungrafted, over-80-year-old vines rooted in volcanic soils at 700 meters altitude, giving this red wine a unique depth and complexity.

The volcanic terroir of Etna is a distinctive element that imparts an unmistakable minerality to Vigne Vecchie, with an extraordinary ability to express the character of the land. These old vines, over 80 years old, yield few fruits, but of exceptional quality. Calabretta practices non-invasive agriculture, using only copper and a bit of sulfur, thus respecting the natural cycle of the plants and the biodiversity of the soil.

The vinification of Vigne Vecchie is a meticulous and artisanal process. The fermentations occur spontaneously, with a five-day maceration on the skins. The malolactic fermentation happens naturally, and the aging takes place in large 70 hl oak barrels for about five years, alternating periods in stainless steel. No fining or filtration is performed, allowing the wine to maintain its authenticity and purity.

In the glass, Vigne Vecchie presents an intense garnet red color with orange reflections that testify to its evolution. The olfactory bouquet is a sensory journey ranging from notes of peat and underbrush to hints of ripe cherry, with touches of Mediterranean scrub and spices such as cinnamon and licorice. Everything is enriched by balsamic and mineral nuances, making the aromatic profile extremely complex and fascinating.

On the palate, Vigne Vecchie 2015 is a powerful and tight wine, with a warm and compact structure. The tannins are well-integrated, giving the wine a robustness balanced by a vibrant freshness and a refined salinity, distinctive characteristics of Etnean wines. The persistence is very long, leaving a lasting memory and inviting further tasting.

This wine is a true tribute to Nerello Mascalese and the Etnean terroir, a genuine and authentic wine that resembles a wise old man of few words but great wisdom. Perfect for pairing with robust and flavorful dishes, Calabretta's Vigne Vecchie is an enological jewel to discover and appreciate with patience, letting oneself be carried away by its history and volcanic soul.
