Barbaresco Reyna 2011 Michele Chiarlo
The Barbaresco Reyna 2011 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo produced by Michele Chiarlo, a historic Piedmontese winery renowned for its careful vineyard management and elegant winemaking style.
The grapes come from vineyards located in Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, three key communes of the Barbaresco appellation. The soils are mainly composed of grey-blue calcareous clay marls rich in microelements, while the Treiso vineyards include a sandy component, which contributes finesse and aromatic complexity to the wine. The vineyards benefit from south-east and south-west exposures, ensuring optimal ripening of Nebbiolo grapes.
Vines are trained using the traditional Guyot system, and harvest is carried out manually, preceded by careful cluster thinning at the end of summer to improve concentration and balance.
Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with a 15–18 day maceration on the skins. During fermentation the cap is gently wetted using the “shower system”, at temperatures between 27 and 32 °C, ensuring balanced extraction of color, aromas and tannins. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel, enhancing the wine’s complexity.
The aging process lasts at least two years, including 9–12 months in medium and large oak casks, followed by further bottle aging. This maturation contributes to the wine’s elegance and aromatic depth.
In the glass, Barbaresco Reyna 2011 displays a brilliant garnet red color. The bouquet is complex and noble, with ethereal notes, red berries, rose petals and tea leaves, complemented by subtle hints of sweet spices.
On the palate it is aristocratic and refined, with remarkably fine tannins and excellent balance. The finish is long and persistent, revealing nuances of tobacco, cocoa, leather and forest floor, typical of mature Nebbiolo wines.
Barbaresco Reyna perfectly reflects the refined style of Michele Chiarlo and pairs beautifully with braised meats, game dishes and aged cheeses, while also offering great pleasure in contemplative tasting moments.
