In the heart of Canavese, Luca Gili turned his father’s old workshop into a unique wine laboratory: Officina del Vino. Here, authentic and expressive wines are born from ancient vineyards and a free, artisanal vision. From Erbaluce to Neretto, including blends of forgotten Piedmontese grapes, Gili’s wines reflect the energy and brightness of this land, balancing freshness, depth, and character in every glass.
MoreIn the eastern hills of Canavese, where the ancient Serra Morenica marks a landscape of glacial origins, Officina del Vino was born from the vision of Luca Gili. Once a financial consultant, Luca abandoned his career to follow the call of the vineyard, transforming his late father’s car workshop into a haven of creativity and experimentation.
The Canavese area, a gentle and luminous basin stretching between Turin and the Aosta Valley, remains one of Piedmont’s most unexplored wine regions. Its gravelly, acidic soils are perfect for creating wines with tension, salinity, and finesse. Gili’s journey began in 2006 with a passito of Erbaluce, but his search for authenticity soon led him beyond technical winemaking, towards a more instinctive and emotional approach inspired by natural, soulful wines.
In 2011, Il Garage dell’Uva was born, followed in 2012 by Plandrùn, the first Canavese orange wine made from Erbaluce. Over time, the winery evolved into a true “officina” — a workshop of ideas and craftsmanship. Each tiny parcel, rarely larger than 2,000 square meters, is cultivated with care and respect for biodiversity. The vineyards host numerous native red varieties, including the fascinating Neretto, of which Gili grows nearly all 14 known biotypes.
His wines share a distinctive purity of fruit, vivid acidity, and a tactile mineral edge. Whether it’s Barbera, Freisa, or the intricate Uvaggio blend (featuring up to fifteen red grapes and a hint of Erbaluce), every bottle expresses energy and balance. The use of oak — particularly barriques — adds depth and age-worthiness without ever overshadowing the terroir.
Today, Officina del Vino stands as one of Piedmont’s most original and soulful producers. A place where wine, art, and conversation blend seamlessly, and where each tasting becomes a journey through the identity of Canavese — a region reborn through the curiosity and brilliance of Luca Gili.
