Yarden Viognier 2019 Golan Heights Winery
The Yarden Viognier 2019, produced by the Golan Heights Winery, is a sophisticated expression of the Viognier grape, entirely sourced from vineyards in the northern Golan Heights, one of Israel’s most renowned winegrowing regions. Situated at elevations between 400 and 1200 meters above sea level, this volcanic plateau offers an exceptional terroir, combining cold winters, with snow at higher altitudes, and mild summers that ensure a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. The volcanic soils further enhance the aromatic intensity and minerality of the wines.
The 2019 vintage was marked by unique climatic conditions. After a promising start to winter with abundant rainfall, the rainy season closed at only 82% of the annual average. This led to moderate vine growth and well-ventilated canopies. July was warmer than usual, with daily temperatures averaging 2°C above normal, accelerating ripening. Fortunately, August returned to typical seasonal weather, resulting in an even, high-quality harvest. The outcome was a wine of outstanding elegance, freshness, and aromatic richness.
Winemaking involved fermenting and aging 50% of the wine in French oak barrels on the lees for four months, which added complexity, texture, and subtle oak nuances. Aromatically, the wine reveals layers of white flowers, apricot, peach, green plum, and crisp green apple, lifted by refined hints of oak. On the palate, it is smooth and balanced, medium-bodied, with lively acidity, leading to a refreshing and persistent finish.
The Yarden Viognier 2019 is delightful to drink upon release yet possesses excellent aging potential for several years, allowing its aromatic profile to evolve with time. It is also a versatile food wine, pairing superbly with spicy and refined dishes such as chicken and mango curry, ginger-glazed halibut, or caramelized leek quiche. This vintage demonstrates how the Golan Heights terroir can produce world-class Viognier, combining international appeal with the unique identity of Israeli winemaking.
