DOMAINE DES ROCHES NEUVES

The Domaine des Roches Neuves stands as one of the most emblematic examples of qualitative revival in the Loire Valley, a project that merges deep historical roots with a modern and uncompromising vision of wine. Located in the village of Varrains, in the heart of the Saumur region, the estate dates back to 1850, but its contemporary identity was shaped in 1991 when Thierry Germain, together with his wife Marie, acquired the property and began a radical transformation.

From the outset, the conversion was total: first to organic farming, then to biodynamic viticulture, with the aim of restoring vitality to the soils and full expressive freedom to the vines. Coming from a Bordeaux winemaking family, Germain brought a strong technical background in vineyard management, which he reinterpreted through the lens of Loire terroir and its most distinctive grape varieties.

Today, the domaine extends over approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, divided into more than 60 distinct parcels, each cultivated and vinified separately. The two key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, which have become the purest expressions of the Saumur terroir. Some of the vineyards are very old, contributing additional depth, complexity and nuance to the estate’s wines.

The terroir is a complex geological mosaic: sand, clay and limestone alternate across the surface, while the subsoil is rich in tuffeau and chalk, essential elements for defining the wines’ mineral tension and structural precision. The cool climate, moderated by the Loire River, ensures slow and balanced ripening, preserving acidity and aromatic finesse.

Viticulture is fully biodynamic and non-interventionist. Vineyard work follows natural cycles with a strong focus on biodiversity and soil vitality. In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous, often using whole clusters, with no selected yeasts, enzymes or additives. The goal is to allow the wine to develop naturally, guided solely by fruit expression and terroir identity.

Vinification takes place across a combination of stainless steel, concrete and wood, depending on the cuvée, while ageing is primarily carried out in oak barrels of varying sizes, chosen to support evolution without masking the wine’s identity.

The estate’s range is broad and highly expressive, showcasing the many facets of Saumur’s Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. It spans from vibrant, accessible wines to complex, age-worthy cuvées, all sharing a distinctive stylistic signature: pure fruit expression, vibrant energy and a strong mineral backbone.

For Cabernet Franc, the hallmark is its juicy, precise fruit character, always clean and never excessive. For Chenin Blanc, the defining feature is a saline, chalk-driven tension that shapes some of the Loire’s most compelling white wines. In both cases, the wines are defined by brightness, elegance and remarkable ageing potential, making Domaine des Roches Neuves one of the most coherent and forward-looking expressions of Saumur today.
