MoreDomaine Gautheron, also known as Alain Gautheron, is based in Fleys, a small village nestled among the hills of Chablis in northern Burgundy. The family's winemaking heritage stretches back seven generations, reflecting a longstanding connection to the region's distinctive vineyards. In 1977, Alain Gautheron joined his father Jean on an estate covering just eight hectares. He took over the property in 1991, before his son Cyril Gautheron joined in 2001, bringing a new chapter of development. Since 2020, Cyril's partner Agnès has also been involved in the family business.
Today, the domaine cultivates approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, spanning Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru. Its holdings include renowned climats such as Montée de Tonnerre, Mont de Milieu, Vaucoupin, Vaillons, Les Clos and Vaudésir, allowing the family to explore the many expressions of Chardonnay across the Chablis landscape.
The identity of these wines is closely connected to the region's geology. Kimmeridgian limestone and marl, rich in ancient marine fossils, form the geological foundation of many Chablis vineyards, contributing to their distinctive structure and mineral character. Higher slopes with limestone soils traditionally described as Portlandian are often associated with Petit Chablis.
The estate's philosophy places environmental responsibility and soil vitality at the centre of its vineyard management. Domaine Gautheron has held High Environmental Value (HVE) Level 3 certification since 2020, following earlier experiments with organic farming on selected plots. Vineyard practices include reduced chemical treatments, mechanical soil cultivation, grass cover and careful management of vine vigour and yields.
Harvesting methods are adapted to the needs of individual parcels. Mechanical harvesting, introduced in 1987, allows greater flexibility in choosing the optimal picking window, while old vines and Premier Cru vineyards are harvested by hand. This pragmatic approach reflects the family's commitment to preserving fruit quality.
The wines of Alain Gautheron reveal the diversity of Chablis, from the bright, approachable freshness of Petit Chablis to the greater complexity and depth of its most celebrated vineyards. Mineral tension, balance and a faithful expression of terroir define the identity of a domaine where family heritage continues to evolve alongside contemporary viticulture.
