Nero d’Avola Riserva “Don Antonio” 2017 Morgante
The Nero d’Avola Riserva “Don Antonio” 2017 by Morgante is one of the most prestigious modern expressions of Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s flagship red grape variety. Produced by the historic Morgante Winery in the Agrigento area, this wine was created to showcase the authentic character of Sicilian terroir through a bold yet elegant style. First released with the 1998 vintage, “Don Antonio” quickly became a benchmark for premium Sicilian red wines.
The grapes are grown at elevations between 500 and 550 meters above sea level on limestone- and clay-rich soils that give the wine structure, depth and a distinctive mineral profile. Following harvest, the grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks with around 20 days of skin maceration at controlled temperatures between 26 and 28 °C, ensuring balanced extraction of color, tannins and aromas. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in steel before the wine ages for 12 months in new French oak barriques sourced from the forests of Allier, Tronçais and Never. The wine then undergoes an additional year of bottle aging before release.
Deep ruby red in color, the bouquet is intense and layered, revealing aromas of ripe black cherry, raspberry, plum, licorice, cinnamon, cocoa and dark chocolate, enriched by refined spicy oak nuances. On the palate, it is rich, smooth and full-bodied, displaying the power and warmth typical of Nero d’Avola while maintaining excellent balance through vibrant freshness and velvety tannins. The finish is long, elegant and persistent.
“Don Antonio” Riserva pairs beautifully with braised meats, grilled red meats, game dishes, roasts and aged cheeses. An iconic Sicilian wine that combines power, elegance and strong territorial identity.
