Les Vieux Clos 2022 Nicolas Joly
In Savennières, along the Loire River, Nicolas Joly has become one of the defining figures of Chenin Blanc worldwide. Les Vieux Clos 2022 comes from a 5.5-hectare vineyard planted on schist soils that bring depth, tension and a distinctive mineral backbone.
The vineyard is farmed according to strict biodynamic principles, with high planting density and controlled yields of around 30 hl/ha. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, are worked in close dialogue with their environment, producing fruit that is concentrated yet never forced.
In the cellar, the approach remains restrained. Grapes undergo gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by around 8 months on fine lees in used double oak barrels. Total sulphur is kept at 76 mg/l, reflecting a philosophy of guidance rather than intervention.
The wine shows a golden hue and a layered aromatic profile, where white flowers, ripe fruit and soft vanilla notes gradually unfold. A subtle mineral thread runs through the palate, giving shape and direction to an otherwise generous texture.
On the palate, Les Vieux Clos 2022 is broad and structured, almost architectural in its build. Volume is balanced by salinity, creating a long, resonant finish that continues to evolve after each sip.
This is not a wine of immediacy. It demands time and air, revealing its complexity slowly. A Chenin Blanc of depth and energy, where richness and reflection coexist in a singular expression of place.
