Description

Gaja Darmagi 1998

Darmagi by Gaja is a landmark wine in Italian viticulture — an elegant, full-bodied red that challenged tradition and helped redefine the potential of Langhe terroir. Introduced in 1982 by Angelo Gaja, Darmagi was the family’s first foray into planting Cabernet Sauvignon in the Barbaresco area, breaking with the Nebbiolo-dominated conventions of Piedmont. The name “Darmagi,” meaning “what a pity” in local dialect, is a nod to his father Giovanni’s disappointment in replacing native grapes with international varieties.

This wine is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and aged for about 18 months in French oak barriques. It shows a deep ruby-red color and a layered bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant, ripe plum, tobacco, leather, cocoa, and sweet spices. On the palate, it is structured yet silky, with polished tannins, beautiful balance, and a long, complex finish.

With its bold character and exceptional longevity, Darmagi bridges the gap between traditional winemaking and international vision. It proves that non-native grapes can thrive in Piedmontese soil and express a new, compelling dimension of the Langhe. Today, Darmagi is considered a modern classic, sought after by collectors and wine lovers worldwide.
