Lagrein Magnum 2021 Muri-Gries
The Lagrein 2021 from the Muri-Gries estate is a classic expression of one of South Tyrol’s most important indigenous grape varieties. The winery is located in the historic abbey of Gries in Bolzano, where winemaking traditions date back centuries. In 1845 Benedictine monks from the Swiss abbey of Muri took over the property, continuing the viticultural work already carried out by Augustinian monks. Today the Benedictine community still manages around 35 hectares of vineyards, with particular dedication to Lagrein.
The grapes come from vineyards situated at about 260 meters above sea level, planted on sandy alluvial soils with a southern exposure that allows optimal ripening of this deeply colored variety. After harvest the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of around 28 °C, with eight days of skin maceration to extract color, structure and aromatic intensity. The wine then matures for several months in large oak casks of 30 and 50 hectoliters, where it gains balance and complexity.
In the glass it displays a deep purple-red color. The bouquet reveals lively aromas of ripe red berries, violet, sweet spices and chocolate. On the palate it is smooth, enveloping and fresh, supported by dense yet velvety tannins that lead to a harmonious finish with a delicate and typical hint of bitter almond. A balanced and food-friendly Lagrein, ideal with red meats, roasts and traditional Alpine cuisine.
