Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG 2018 San Martin
Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG 2018 is a genuine expression of the Canavese terroir and the philosophy of San Martin, a boutique winery founded by Alberto and Julieta. Their project represents the meeting of two worlds: Alberto’s Piedmontese roots and Julieta’s Argentine heritage. The winery’s name reflects this connection, linking the traditional feast of San Martino in rural Piemonte with General José de San Martín, one of the most important figures in Argentina’s history.
The vineyards are located at approximately 400 metres above sea level with a south-southeast exposure, allowing optimal grape ripening. The soils are of morainic origin, composed mainly of sand, pebbles and stones with small amounts of silt and clay, creating excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s distinctive minerality.
Harvest takes place manually during the second week of September to ensure optimal fruit selection. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of around 17°C, preserving the delicate aromatic profile of Erbaluce. The wine then ages for approximately nine months on its fine lees, with weekly bâtonnage adding depth, texture and complexity while maintaining freshness and precision.
Erbaluce is one of Piedmont’s most historic grape varieties, and Caluso DOCG holds a special place in Italian wine history as the first white wine appellation in Piemonte to receive DOC status in 1967. Local legend tells of the beautiful nymph Albaluce, whose tears fell upon the fertile land and transformed into grapevines, giving birth to Erbaluce.
The wine displays a refined and vibrant profile, combining fresh acidity, mineral tension and elegant balance. Aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits, fresh apple and subtle herbal nuances lead to a crisp, savoury palate with remarkable persistence.
An excellent companion to seafood, freshwater fish, shellfish, white meats, fresh cheeses and traditional Piedmontese starters, this wine highlights the versatility and ageing potential of one of northern Italy’s most distinctive native varieties.
