Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore 2018 Scala
The Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore 2018 from Scala is a refined expression of the Gaglioppo grape, a native Calabrian varietal cultivated in Cirò Marina for centuries. Scala, a family-run winery managing about fifteen hectares of vineyard, focuses on maintaining the grape’s typicity and terroir expression. The Mediterranean climate, warm, sunny, and ventilated, along with the proximity to the Ionian Sea, ensures healthy, perfectly ripened grapes capable of producing an elegant and balanced wine.
The vineyard for this Superiore Riserva covers approximately 3 hectares at 200–250 m a.s.l., on clay-sandy soils that provide both structure and mineral complexity. Grapes are hand-harvested with careful selection. Fermentation involves an extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannins, and aromatic complexity. Aging takes place in two stages: 12–16 months in cement tanks to preserve freshness and aromatic integrity, followed by 6–12 months in barriques, imparting complexity and subtle spice notes.
The wine shows an intense, bright ruby-red color with warm reflections. On the nose, it develops Mediterranean aromas: herbs, red berries, licorice root, balsamic hints, and subtle iodine notes. On the palate, it is harmonious, medium-bodied, with integrated tannins and layered flavors that culminate in a long, intense, balsamic finish. This Riserva demonstrates the elegance and finesse of Gaglioppo, achieving balance and a memorable drinking experience.
Scala winery, with its limited but focused production, highlights the potential of Cirò’s terroir, showing how Gaglioppo can thrive under moderate oak aging while maintaining its varietal character. The Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore 2018 pairs beautifully with meat ragù, roasted or grilled dishes, and robust Mediterranean cuisine, but it is also excellent to enjoy on its own to fully appreciate its complexity and aromatic depth.
