Canavese Barbera “Chèrmes” 2021 – Fratelli Marco
The “Chèrmes” Canavese Barbera DOC 2021 from Fratelli Marco Winery embodies a new dimension of Piedmont’s Barbera — one rooted in altitude, minerality, and restraint. In the morainic hills north of Turin, the Barbera grape thrives in sandy and gravelly soils, which gift the wines with tension and luminosity rather than weight and density.
Vinified with precision and respect for the grape’s natural energy, the Chèrmes undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by a short maceration that highlights fruit purity and aromatic lift. After fermentation, the wine rests for 9 months partly in steel and partly in French oak barrels, acquiring subtle roundness while maintaining its bright, linear profile.
In the glass, it shines with a brilliant ruby hue and reveals aromas of red cherries, wild berries, violets, and hints of white pepper. On the palate, it’s fresh and well-balanced, with silky tannins, crisp acidity, and a lingering mineral finish. The oak influence is barely perceptible, adding structure without heaviness.
Fratelli Marco’s Chèrmes captures the spirit of Canavese: alpine freshness, authenticity, and elegance. It’s a modern Barbera, less rustic and more graceful, ideal for those who appreciate expressive, food-friendly reds that tell the story of their mountain terroir.
