Barolo Monvigliero 2015 Burlotto
Barolo Monvigliero 2015 from Burlotto is widely regarded as one of the purest and most compelling expressions of Nebbiolo from Verduno, a village whose wines have become increasingly admired for their elegance, fragrance and precision. At the heart of this reputation lies the celebrated Monvigliero cru, considered by many wine lovers and critics to be among the finest vineyard sites in the entire Barolo appellation.
Located in the northernmost part of the denomination near the Tanaro River, Monvigliero is rooted in geological formations dating back between five and seven million years. Its distinctive soils, rich in limestone, gypsum and ancient marine deposits, contribute to wines with remarkable acidity, aromatic lift and finesse. Historically, Monvigliero was often mentioned alongside Cannubi as one of the most prized vineyards in Barolo, a reputation that continues to this day.
Few producers are as closely linked to the history of Verduno as Burlotto. Founded in 1850 by Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto, the winery became one of Piedmont’s most respected names long before the modern Barolo renaissance. Its wines were famously selected to accompany the Duke of Abruzzi’s Arctic expedition in 1899, cementing the estate’s reputation for excellence.
The exceptional 2015 vintage produced a wine of extraordinary harmony and depth. In the glass, it displays a bright, translucent ruby-red colour with delicate garnet reflections. The nose is remarkably lifted and expressive, revealing aromas of violet, pomegranate, mandarin seed, raspberry and red currant, complemented by hints of liquorice, almond brittle and subtle tar nuances.
The palate is a masterclass in elegance. Medium-bodied yet remarkably persistent, it combines vibrant acidity with finely sculpted tannins and exceptional balance. Layers of red berry fruit unfold gradually, supported by floral, mineral and savoury undertones. The finish is long, graceful and incredibly persistent, reflecting the unique personality of Monvigliero.
An outstanding match for braised meats, game, white truffle, lamb and aged cheeses, Barolo Monvigliero 2015 is a wine of immense character and longevity. It stands as one of the finest examples of Verduno’s distinctive interpretation of Nebbiolo and a true icon of the Barolo world.
