Marchesi Alfieri – Barbera d’Asti “Alfiera” 2017
The Marchesi Alfieri “Alfiera” 2017 is a benchmark expression of Barbera d’Asti, crafted exclusively from grapes grown in the estate’s historic 4.5-hectare vineyard. It reflects the winery’s commitment to combining tradition with precision winemaking to enhance varietal character and terroir.
In the vineyard, quality is achieved through targeted cluster thinning at veraison and controlled yields of 1–1.2 kg per vine, with hand harvesting in early September. This ensures optimal ripeness and concentration.
In the cellar, the process is designed to build structure and complexity. After careful sorting and gentle destemming, fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 28–30°C for 15–20 days, with délestage and gentle pump-overs for balanced extraction. The malolactic fermentation in oak with bâtonnage enhances texture and aromatic depth.
Aging occurs in French oak barriques (Allier and Tronçais) of 225L and 500L, adding layers of complexity while preserving varietal purity. The wine shows a deep, intense ruby color, evolving towards garnet with age.
The nose is rich and complex, featuring ripe cherry, forest berries and plum, with elegant hints of vanilla and cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied, structured and velvety, with well-integrated acidity and a long, fruit-driven finish.
With an aging potential of over 10 years, it reaches peak harmony after a few years in bottle. Perfect with red meats and aged cheeses, it is crafted for those seeking intensity, balance and longevity.
