Barbaresco Coste Rubin 2010 Fontanafredda
The Barbaresco Coste Rubin 2010 represents one of the most elegant expressions of Nebbiolo produced by the historic winery Fontanafredda. The grapes come from vineyards located in Treiso and Neive, two renowned areas within the Barbaresco appellation known for producing wines of finesse, structure and longevity.
The vineyards lie between 250 and 300 meters above sea level, with south and south-west exposure, ideal for the slow and even ripening of Nebbiolo grapes. The soils consist of clayey sediments rich in calcareous marl, typical of the Langhe hills, which provide elegance, complexity and a distinctive mineral character. Vines are trained using the Guyot system, with a density of about 4,500 vines per hectare, ensuring balanced yields and concentration.
Harvest usually takes place between the first and second ten days of October, when Nebbiolo reaches optimal phenolic ripeness while maintaining freshness and aromatic integrity.
In the cellar, winemaking follows traditional methods. After destemming and crushing, fermentation occurs at 28–30 °C, with frequent pump-overs to enhance the extraction of color and tannins. Skin maceration lasts around 15 days, while malolactic fermentation takes place before the end of the following winter.
Aging begins in January after the harvest and takes place in barriques and 20–30 hl Allier oak casks, where the wine matures for about one year. After a short period in stainless steel tanks, the wine completes its development with further bottle aging.
In the glass it shows a ruby red color with garnet reflections, typical of evolving Nebbiolo. The bouquet is complex and layered, with ripe plum, blueberry and violet, followed by notes of licorice, cinnamon and tobacco. On the palate it is rich, structured and enveloping, with well-integrated tannins and a dense, harmonious texture.
This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with rich red meat dishes, roasts and braised meats, as well as medium and long-aged cheeses, highlighting its elegance and depth.
